I do not recommend Sunnova for a business that wants to own equipment outright, has a complex roof requiring custom engineering, or has a sustainability mandate that requires owning the RECs. If that's you, a lease is probably the wrong structure.

'So this guy is just anti-lease.' No. I've approved leases when the math supported it. The problem isn't leasing. The problem is choosing a lease because the monthly payment looks cheap without checking the total cost.

What I mean by total cost is this: add the annual escalator, the buyout option, the operation and maintenance fees, and the production guarantee over the entire term. A lease that starts at $600 per month might end at $850 per month, and the buyout might be $60,000. That can still be a good deal if the alternative is a $350,000 cash purchase. But you have to run the comparison.

Sunnova solar energy is a solid, professional option for the right business. It's not magic, and it shouldn't be the default. Battery storage costs are coming down, but you need a planning number that fits your load profile. Tier 1 solar modules matter, but ask for the manufacturer name. Sensible thermal energy storage deserves a place in the comparison. And save the customer service number before you need it.
