Why I Rejected a Solar Lease Package—and What It Taught Me About Sunnova Solar Cost
Last November, I opened a design package for a commercial solar lease and stopped at line 14 of the equipment schedule. That happens more often than I’d like. I’m a quality and brand compliance manager at Sunnova. I review every proposed installation package before it reaches the field — roughly 150 packages a year. The project was a 110 kW rooftop array for a Gulf Coast food distributor, paired with LFP battery storage and an EV charging depot. The client needed flexibility; the design team gave them ambiguity. Those aren’t the same thing. Let me rephrase that: the energy model and the monthly cash-flow story were fine. The equipment description was not.

Three Red Flags in One Package

The battery line item read like a product listing
Here’s the text that stopped me:
Qty 8 — 100Ah LiFePO4 battery Bluetooth, for remote state-of-charge and temperature monitoring.
On the surface, that looks okay. But it describes a component, not an energy storage system. A 100Ah LiFePO4 battery Bluetooth module is fine for a marine application or a portable power station. For a commercial installation? At least, that’s been my experience with commercial and industrial systems — you need to define the full assembly: the inverter interlock, the battery management system, the communications protocol, and the UL 9540 listing. The app on the battery is not a substitute for a tested system.
The design engineer later told me, “I said ‘verify the battery management system and the inverter can talk to each other.’ They heard ‘make sure the battery has Bluetooth for the phone app.’ Result: the first proposed vendor was disqualified because their BMS spoke a different protocol than the selected inverter.” That is a communication failure with a price tag.
The inverter note said “TBD”
The next line under “Inverter” was worse. It said:
TBD — research where to buy power inverter.
An electrician reading that note in the field will absolutely Google “where to buy power inverter,” pick the first unit that looks close, and submit it for approval. Then the utility engineer rejects it because it lacks the required UL listing or the DC input range doesn’t match the array. That is how a small specification gap becomes a $20,000 replacement and a two-week delay.
We had a similar case in our Q1 2024 quality audit. The ticket history showed that projects with vague inverter notes required 34% more troubleshooting calls than projects with an explicit model and installation detail. No, it wasn’t a controlled experiment. But the signal was strong enough that we now require the actual model number before final approval.
The Global Energy Monitor was a mystery
Then there was the owner’s requirement: “Global Energy Monitor GWTAFTWIRED.” I have nothing against the device — it may be a capable piece of equipment. But the design package didn’t say how it connects to the network, whether it sends data to the Sunnova monitoring portal, or who supplies it. It was a copy-pasted line from the RFP. That isn’t a spec, it’s a wish.
During the revision, I called Sunnova support directly to ask whether our monitoring platform could accept data from the Global Energy Monitor GWTAFTWIRED. The support rep pulled up the integration matrix and said it works over Modbus TCP with the advanced monitoring feature on the account. That’s exactly the kind of answer that should be written down before the purchase order is cut.
The Revised Package
We fixed the package in four days. The fix wasn’t exotic. We named the inverter, kept the 100Ah LiFePO4 battery Bluetooth line but added the required BMS protocol and system listing, and documented the Global Energy Monitor GWTAFTWIRED integration steps. The commercial customer’s first reaction was relief, not anger. They said they’d rather have the conversation on paper than on the roof in July.
There’s something satisfying about getting that revision back. The line items are precise, the support answer is attached, and the installation plan no longer depends on a Google search. After the pushback and the phone calls, seeing clean specs on the page — that’s the payoff.
What I’d Tell a Business Before Signing
You don’t need to read all 75 pages of a spec. But ask who reviews it. If you’re comparing two proposals for solar and storage, look for places where a phrase like “100Ah LiFePO4 battery Bluetooth” or “Global Energy Monitor GWTAFTWIRED” appears without a system context. Then ask the provider what happens if that component does not work with the inverter.
When people ask me about Sunnova solar cost, I don’t start with the price per watt or the monthly lease payment. I start with what the lease price buys: a review process, a monitoring integration path, and a support line that answers technical questions before the system goes into service. Good quality is not a luxury line item. It is the difference between a project where equipment shows up correctly the first time and one where the superintendent is on another website trying to figure out where to buy power inverter.
Call Sunnova support during your due diligence and ask a specific question about monitoring or battery communication. If the answer is “I’ll transfer you,” that’s fine; if the answer is wrong, that tells you something. In my experience, the support team earns the right to handle spec questions by actually handling them.
