Inside a commercial system, four parts matter: the battery cells, a battery management system (BMS), an inverter, and a controller that decides when to charge and discharge. The controller reads the tariff signal, watches the building load, and makes the call. That is the whole game.
The mental model is simple. A battery is not a generator. It's an energy time-shifting asset.
The EV charger market changes the storage math
The EV charger market is now the main reason commercial customers ask about batteries. A 60 kW fast charger can push a building's peak demand far higher than any office equipment. If you add chargers without storage, you may be buying a bigger service upgrade than you expect.
In Q2 2024, our team evaluated four 60 kW chargers for a fleet depot. The utility feedback was a service upgrade of $70,000 to $80,000. We changed the design to include a battery and managed charging, and the upgrade disappeared. That saved the project, but only because storage was in the loop before the utility application, not after. Why does this matter? In March 2023, my team ordered four 51R lithium batteries for a solar-powered service trailer. We matched the old AGM battery footprint and assumed the BMS would work with our DC-DC charger. It didn't. Over two weeks, the charger kept shutting off, and we spent $1,850 on replacements and labor. The lesson: in any lithium system, the BMS protocol is the system. A group size is just a box.
Not great. Not terrible. But expensive.
Why value per dollar beats price per dollar
